I am trying to establish what chime tune was played by Lyons Maid/Lord Neilson (not Softee) vans in the sixties also the El Dorado vans. Can anyone help?

Lyons Maid was a seven note tune, in a large electric box with speed control. "Buy it from the Lyons Maid Van". Musical notes to follow IS Norfolk
I am not that familiar with Lord Neilson vans but of course as they were part of the Lyons Maid company and as such the only chimes I ever heard were Westminster or the Mr softee jingle, and of course later on Tonibell joined the company with their own jingle. BS Suffolk

I have a digital recording of the 'Midland Counties' chime, Thorens movement, is this the same one?

6 Could someone please claifiy the difference between hard & soft ice cream vans. thank you. Hard & soft Vans describe the major difference between vans (or trucks) in the UK. A soft van has a Whippy type ice cream machine fitted (soft ice cream) wheras a hard van doesn't. The soft ice cream is freshly made at the time from liquid mix. The soft vans usually have a direct drive to power the ice cream machine from the engine rather than an electric generator. Hard vans only have fridges & chillers and sell pre wrapped frozen products and scoop ice cream only. Soft vans can have fridges and chillers as well. CL Staffordshire

9 Q : what is direct drive.
Q : how much does it cost .
Q : does it work with standard ice cream freezers.
Q : what about a 12volt to 240volt unit .
1: A direct drive is a drive taken off via the engine using a bracket mounted on the side of the engine containing bearings, shaft and an electro-magnetic clutch
2: A good quality unit is £330 and can be purchased from Southern Sales & Services (see web site)
3: This unit is designed to work with soft ice cream machines. However on transport refrigerated vehicles a direct drive unit is again driven via the engine but this will run a cooling system mounted either over the cab or within an insulated body
4: To run 240 volts from a 12 volt system you would require to run a very large inverter which if you are thinking of locating within the average ice cream van would be out of the question due to the weight and size TD
We are investigating putting shaft driven 240 volt generators onto the direct drive systems. This will power any mains appliance within the van from a ring main - shop ice cream mchines, slush, fridges, microwaves, lighting etc email mobiling Webmaster for further details
