39 a_Question: Can anyone tell me why vans are built with the ice cream machines run off driveshafts? Why are they not built with large gensets plugin machines? I am in Western Australia and find a lack of information here. b_Emailaddress: calvin@istnet.net.au Probably economics - the van builders find it cheaper to put in a direct drive system and alter the ice cream machine than to provide a large inverter or other power pack. Obviously mains plug-ins don't work when you are travelling the streets but are ok for static sites. Fuel powered generators are an option and have been used but some sites prohibit them on noise and fumes. The new method being looked at is to put in a genset driven by the driveshaft to provide a ring main circuit around the van - then you can hook anything into it! Have a word with Southern Sales or PGAR Engineering about this.
